San Diego FC continues to make headlines as it prepares for its first season in Major League Soccer.

The expansion team is now reportedly close to adding a USMNT player to their roster.

Luca De la Torre, a midfielder with experience both abroad and on the international stage, is said to be nearing a loan move from Celta de Vigo to the new MLS side.

This move would see the California-born De la Torre return to his roots. The 25-year-old has spent much of his career playing in Europe, but with limited playing time at Celta this season, it seems the MLS could be an opportunity to revitalize his career.

The USMNT guys keep making headlines, with recent talk about Christian Pulisic being doubtful for upcoming matches due to an injury and DeJuan Jones still considering a move to Europe.

According to Tom Bogert, De la Torre is likely to join San Diego FC on loan, with the goal of getting more playing time ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted in North America.

De la Torre’s current situation at Celta de Vigo has made him a prime candidate for a transfer. This season, he has only logged 30 minutes of play—27 in the Copa del Rey and just one in La Liga.

With such limited involvement, the midfielder is reportedly seeking a fresh start. The 2026 World Cup is looming large, and De la Torre will be eager to secure a spot with the USMNT, something that is hard to do without regular playing time at the club level.

A move to San Diego FC would bring him closer to his roots. De la Torre was born in California, and his early soccer years were spent in the U.S. with the Nomad Soccer Club and San Diego Surf before moving to England and later the Netherlands.

De la Torre’s journey so far

Luca De la Torre’s career has seen him play across several countries. He started at Fulham in England, making his debut in 2016, and later moved to Heracles in the Netherlands before joining Celta de Vigo in 2022.

On the international stage, he has represented the USMNT 24 times, scoring his first goal for the national team in a 1-2 loss to Canada in September 2024.

The potential signing of De la Torre would not only strengthen San Diego FC’s squad but also bolster the USMNT’s player pool as the 2026 World Cup draws closer.

His experience in Europe and with the national team could bring valuable leadership to the MLS team, and his move would certainly be one to watch in the coming days.
