MLS continues its evolution in 2025, consolidating itself as one of the most competitive leagues on the continent.

With the arrival of world-class players and the development of promising youngsters, the Eastern and Western Conferences promise a season full of excitement.

Teams like FC Cincinnati, with the definitive departure of Lucho Acosta, and Philadelphia Union, which continues to invest in quality talent, are looking to be protagonists.

In addition, clubs like CF Montreal and Charlotte FC, which faces its fourth season in the MLS, aspire to surprise its own and strangers.

Toronto FC has an uncertain future for its project with many doubts ahead

The future of Toronto FC seems to be full of uncertainty, especially after the recent news about the possible departure of Lorenzo Insigne.

The Canadian team is not going through its best moment, and the performance of the Italian footballer, along with his teammate Federico Bernardeschi, has not been what was expected in recent years.

Both players arrived in Toronto with the expectation of leading an ambitious project, but the reality has been different, with Bernardeschi having very low statistics as shown by Transfermark.

With only 37 games played in 2024, he scored 9 goals and provided 8 assists, which are very low numbers for a world football superstar.

Since his arrival, the team has failed to qualify for the Eastern Conference playoffs, making it clear that the bet on these two figures has not yielded the expected results.

A project that did not meet expectations

With the arrival of Robin Fraser as coach, Toronto FC seems to be heading towards a complete renovation. Insigne is not in the coach’s plans, and his departure seems imminent.

Added to this are the doubts about the future of Bernardeschi, who has also failed to stand out as expected.

The team has also failed to achieve success in the Canadian Championship, falling in the final to Vancouver Whitecaps FC in recent years.

All these factors have led the Toronto FC board to evaluate a restructuring, betting on a new approach based on young talent and a more balanced squad.

A return to the glory of 2017 for Toronto FC?

Toronto FC is looking to regain the identity that led it to be the most dominant team in MLS in 2017, when it won every title up for grabs, including the MLS Cup and the Canadian Championship.

To do so, the club will have to make key decisions in the coming months, ensuring that the roster is up to the task and leaving behind a project that, despite the quality of its players, failed to meet expectations.
