The United States national team had a brilliant start in 2025 under the direction of new coach Mauricio Pochettino.

The team has shown promise in this early stage, achieving two convincing victories in friendly matches. In its debut, it beat Venezuela 3-1, and in its second match it achieved a dominant 3-0 victory over Costa Rica.

The match against Costa Rica showed the great tactical work of Pochettino, as well as the emerging talent of several American players, mainly those who play in the MLS.

Positive victory for USMNT by 3-0 against Costa Rica, in its second friendly of 2025

With a resounding victory, they managed to take their second consecutive win in 2025, under the command of Mauricio Pochettino, with a fantastic match as shown by SofaScore.

The first goal came in the 21st minute courtesy of Brian White, a 28-year-old forward currently playing for the Vancouver Whitecaps.

White took advantage of an opportunity to open the scoring and set the tone in a match where the United States dominated on all lines.

In the second half, the team continued its strong performance and closed the match with two more goals. In the 77th minute, Caden Clark, a 21-year-old midfielder for CF Montreal, scored the second goal, confirming his potential as one of the young promises of American soccer.

Finally, Patrick Agyemang, a 24-year-old forward for Charlotte FC, put the finishing touch by scoring the 3-0. This was his second consecutive goal in the January friendlies, after also scoring against Venezuela.

A look ahead under Pochettino

These first matches under Mauricio Pochettino have served as an opportunity to test the MLS players, as important American figures who play in Europe.

Like Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Gio Reyna and others, who are concentrated in their respective clubs.

Despite this, local talent has lived up to expectations, proving that the American league has high-level players who can significantly contribute to the team’s growth.

With these two victories, the United States begins to prepare for its next challenge: facing Panama in March during the CONCACAF Nations League.

This will be the first major official challenge for Pochettino, who seems to have started on the right foot in a stage that promises to take American soccer to new levels of competitiveness.
