The MLS begins in less than a month. Every team is moving their last pieces of the transfer market puzzle. The Colorado Rapids aren’t the exception to the rule.
Just like the Houston Dynamo with Sebastian Ferreira, the Colorado Rapids suffered crucial departures and had to reinforce themselves. The Rapids should imitate what the New York Red Bulls did, and find a player at a low cost that can boost your team.
And they did. The Colorado Rapids are signing Theodore Ku-Dipietro from D.C. United. The Black and Red will receive $1.125 million plus $275k in add-on.
The club signed a promising player with experience in the league to try and fix the spots left by the departures.
Is this the right call for the Colorado Rapids?
During this transfer window, the Rapids lost one crucial player in the midfield as per Sports Illustrated. Jasper Löffelsend was a rotational player in Chris Armas’s formation.
However, Löffelsend was the first substitute the coach made for the midfield. The Germans played 19 games in the 2024 season. Although he wasn’t a starter, his departure means a significant loss for Armas. Now, he is one man short and needs a young player who could fill this spot.
And the institute gave him that man. At 23 years old, Ku-Dipietro has enough experience in the MLS to become a crucial part of this team.
Regardless, the midfielder will have the same job as in D.C. United. In the Black and Red team, he was a regular substitute. However, when he joined the game, he could improve the team.
Knowing that Ku-Dipietro has the characteristics Armas is looking for, Colorado Rapids made the right call to sign this player. The club uses a 4231 formation and rarely changes to a 3421.
In this case, the formation allows Theodore to play in his natural position of offensive midfielder. Making him benefit from the team style of playing.
Theodore Ku-Dipietro stats with D.C. United
The 23-year-old player arrived at the club in 2022. Since then, Ku-Dipietro played 65 matches, starting on 38 of them. He played 3,269 minutes in his three years in the club.
The former Loudoun United player scored seven goals and delivered eight assists on his time with the team.
Last season marked his starting point, and Theodore showed his talent by playing in 29 matches, starting 24 games.
