The 2025 MLS season is about to begin and it is shaping up to be one of the best in the history of the league.

With international figures such as Lionel Messi at Inter Miami and Marco Reus at LA Galaxy, these and more footballers will stand out in the 2025 season.

In addition to important reinforcements in teams such as FC Dallas and Charlotte FC, the league seeks to attract more audiences and establish itself as one of the most exciting competitions on the continent.

But this impact of the new additions has left several interests prior to the start of MLS 2025, and one of the most prominent names these days is the New York City FC player

Botafogo and its millionaire offer of 17M dollars for Santiago Rodríguez

The Brazilian team Botafogo has made an offer of 17 million dollars for Santiago Rodríguez, a figure that has generated a debate in New York City FC about the possibility of letting go of one of its most important players.

Rodríguez, 25, has been a key part of the New York club’s recent success, winning the MLS Cup title in 2021 and the Campeones Cup in 2022.

His impact in the 2024 season was significant, making 40 appearances, scoring 16 goals and providing 6 assists, according to Transfermarkt statistics.

His contribution was instrumental in the team’s qualification for the Eastern Conference playoffs, although they were eliminated by New York Red Bulls.

Will Santiego Rodríguez stay or leave MLS?

Despite Botafogo’s attractive offer, New York City FC has not yet made a final decision.

The club sees Rodríguez as a fundamental pillar in the midfield, but the $17 million represents an interesting opportunity for a possible sale.

Negotiations are still ongoing, and in the coming days it will be decided whether the Uruguayan will remain in the MLS or make the jump to Brazilian football.
